CSS

Monday, April 18th, 2005

I’m learning Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for creating websites. Thanks to the great SteamSHIFT engine who helped me get started, gave me a few pointers and found this site which is a beginners course in css.

I’ve started using my own website to play with. Please have a look, see what you think and let me know.

Statement of Intent, Stephen Cross

  • Progress and achievement through units 1 to 7:

The first three months of the course were well structured and provided me with a useful environment in which to play with new media, consider my working methods and learn new ways to develop ideas. (more…)

Turns out these guys might know a thing or two about lenses and the like

    Drawing Machine

    Friday, April 15th, 2005

    Drawing Machine:

The drawing machine is based on the idea that a mechanism, with freedom to move on a surface, will make repetitive and incremental movements. A pencil or pen added to the mechanism then graphically records the movement, producing the type of pattern seen in old banknotes, etc.

Tempted to buy a few of these. See what I could make them do if I strung them together. . .

    ELECTRIC PEN

    Friday, April 15th, 2005

    ELECTRIC PEN:

This uses an electric motor to produce heat when in contact with fax paper. Magically (from the pupils’ point of view), it creates instant pure black lines – equivalent to drawing with a spirit marker but without toxic fumes.

Not quite sure why I like this, you’ll know when I work it out.

    Can Crusher

    Friday, April 15th, 2005

    Can Crusher:

The classic experiment of crushing a can using atmospheric pressure is now cheap and easy! Simply attach the special moulded top to any empty drinks can, let a small amount of water vapour cool down inside, and the can collapses. The top can be re-used any number of times.

I must get me one of these!! Call it childish but this is the kind of thing I LOVED as a kid.

    Inverting Glasses and Upright Looking

    Thursday, April 14th, 2005

A german page (mein Deutche est nicht zu gud) with 12 minute footage of a man wearing inverting glasses. Well worth watching if you’ve got a fast internet connection. I don’t know anything about the authenticity of the site but the footage, although poor quality, is very interesting.

    See link here

I’m really intrigued by the design of the glasses and whether they use prisms or mirrors - I think I need some help translating the page. . .
